¡Por un 2014 de resistencia y de lucha por los derechos!
El célebre pintor J.M.W. Turner fue un activo antiesclavista. Miembro de la británicaAnti-Slavery Society (cuyo nombre oficial era The Society for the Mitigation and Gradual Abolition of Slavery Throughout the British Dominions), impulsó con otros socios de esta organización el nacimiento en 1839 de The British and Foreign Anti-Slavery Society, que trataba de impulsar la abolición y persecución de la esclavitud en todo el mundo. Su cuadro, pintado en 1840, es uno de los más conocidos del gran pintor inglés y fue expuesto en la Anti-Slavery Society Convention celebrada en Londres en 1840. Turner lo exhibió junto a los versos de un poema que, al parecer, él mismo había escrito en 1812 y que hoy podrían acompañar las fotografías de naufragios en Lampedusa, o en las costas españolas:
Aloft all hands, strike the top-masts and belay; / Yon angry setting sun and fierce-edged clouds / Declare the Typhon’s coming. / Before it sweeps your decks, throw overboard / The dead and dying – ne’er heed their chainsHope, / Hope, fallacious Hope! / Where is thy market now?
